Flexible Picking Practices for Warehouse Operations

Inspired Technology Systems has added new picking features to the Inspired ERP and warehouse management system to help warehouse teams handle real-world order fulfillment situations more efficiently.

Warehouse picking does not always go exactly as planned. Product may be blocked, damaged, unavailable, difficult to access, or better suited to be picked from another pallet. Order requirements can also change at the last minute.

To support these situations, Inspired ERP now offers flexible picking practices, including pallet swapping and partial picking.

Swapping Pallets During Picking

The pallet swapping feature allows warehouse workers to pick from a different pallet than the one originally recommended by the system.

This gives warehouse teams more flexibility when the recommended pallet is not the best option at that moment. A different pallet may be easier to access, better suited for the order, or more practical based on current warehouse activity.

Instead of stopping the picking process or requiring manual intervention, the worker can scan a different pallet reference number that may satisfy the order line.

The system then validates whether the scanned pallet meets the requirements of the order line. If the pallet is acceptable, the picking process can continue. If not, the system can provide feedback so the worker understands why the pallet cannot be used.

Picking Outside the Recommended Sequence

In some cases, warehouse workers may also need to pick order lines outside of the recommended picking sequence.

This can happen when warehouse conditions, product accessibility, time-sensitive orders, or operational priorities make a different sequence more practical.

By allowing controlled flexibility within the picking process, Inspired ERP helps warehouse teams keep orders moving while still maintaining system validation and inventory accuracy.

Partial Picking

The partial picking feature allows warehouse workers to pick fewer units than originally specified on an order line when needed.

This is useful when product is damaged, unavailable, short, or affected by a last-minute change in order requirements. Instead of forcing an all-or-nothing picking process, the system can support partial fulfillment of the order line.

Partial picking helps warehouses continue working through the order while accurately reflecting what was actually picked.

Better Flexibility Without Losing Control

Flexible picking is important because warehouse operations need both structure and practical decision-making.

The system should guide workers, validate inventory, and support accurate fulfillment. At the same time, it should not prevent experienced warehouse employees from making reasonable adjustments when the physical warehouse situation requires it.

By supporting pallet swapping and partial picking, Inspired ERP gives warehouse teams the flexibility they need while still maintaining control over inventory, order fulfillment, and picking accuracy.

Built for Real Warehouse Operations

These picking features are especially useful for cold storage warehouses, food distributors, manufacturers, and other inventory-driven businesses where product movement, availability, accessibility, and timing can change throughout the day.

Inspired Technology Systems continues to improve its ERP and warehouse management software based on the real-world needs of warehouse teams, sales teams, operations managers, and inventory-driven businesses.
